We're Johnna and Clint. We’re a couple living on Kauai, and Too Awkward for a Twosome is everything we talk about when the mic is on. Sometimes that’s fitness and nutrition. Sometimes it’s our relationship, the move, starting over, or the stuff most people keep to themselves.

We built this from two separate, unglamorous, years-long fights to get our own lives back, and from what happened when we found each other on the other side of them.

Johnna’s Story

A woman with blonde hair, glasses, and tan skin sitting on a log on a sandy beach with lush green vegetation and tall palm trees in the background, under an overcast sky.

This whole thing started as Johnna's idea. The podcast was her brainchild, and everything else grew out from there. So this is where her story starts too.

Johnna's fight began with a body-image wound as a kid, hardened by name-calling that followed her from elementary school into her teens, and it locked into a pattern by 15: restrict hard, lose weight fast, feel good, get hungry, eat again, gain it back, and start over, a cycle that would repeat, in different forms, for more than three decades.

She tried nearly everything the diet world has ever sold: extreme calorie restriction, raw foodism, one-meal-a-day windows, cleanses. Each one worked for a while. None of them lasted, because none of them addressed what was actually happening: a metabolism that had spent thirty years bracing for famine.

At her lowest point, believing something was simply broken in her, she finally walked into a gym and committed to lifting, not because she expected it to be different, but because she'd run out of other options. It was the first thing that ever actually worked, not as a diet, but as a way of healing the thing underneath the diets.

That's the story behind Rebuilt for Women. It isn't theory. It's what actually got her out.

Clint’s Story

A shirtless man with long gray hair and a beard sitting on a piece of driftwood on a sandy beach, giving a thumbs-up and smiling, with a wooden structure made of driftwood and trees in the background.

Clint spent the better part of two decades in a close, quiet relationship with alcohol. It didn't start as a problem, a beer with his brother during slow winters, a drink with the coaching staff after practice. But it became a daily one, then a several-times-a-week blackout, then a way of life he stopped questioning.

There wasn't one dramatic rock bottom. There was a recording, one he didn't remember making, of himself talking for almost an hour about wanting to die. There was a job he loved, gone without warning, that knocked something loose he couldn't explain at the time. And there was a Fourth of July conversation with his sister-in-law that finally cracked the rationalizations open.

He quit cold turkey. He kept every bottle in the house, in plain sight, because he'd decided the only way through was to face it, not hide from it, and he did, one fear at a time: the drinking first, then the dark, then water, then the phone calls he used to avoid making.

What came after wasn't instant. Rebuilding relationships that had gone quiet during the worst of it took longer than getting sober did. But the gym became the place where the internal work found somewhere to go, and, eventually, the thing he wanted to help other people find too.

How Elevated Life Started

This was all born out of our own rebuilding. Johnna was learning what her body could actually do. Clint was rebuilding his life from the ground up. Somewhere in the middle of that, the long walks and the conversations we couldn’t keep to ourselves turned into a podcast in 2025.

We set out to say the things we wished someone had told us about the real, unglamorous work of choosing your life back one decision at a time.

It started as Elevated Life. In 2026 it became Too Awkward for a Twosome, a name that fits where we are now: more fun, still honest, and about all of life. The story behind the name is on the podcast.

Two people, a woman and a man, holding a vertical sign with a nature landscape and a logo. The woman has blonde hair, glasses, and wears a black jacket. The man has a beard, long hair, a black beanie, and a blue and yellow jacket. The sign reads "ELEVATED LIFE" with a mountain and lake scene, and a QR code at the bottom. There is a large green plant on the left and a woven light fixture above.

Kauai

In 2026, we left the life we'd built in Washington and moved to Kauai, not on a whim, and not because anything there was wrong, but because it had become clear we'd outgrown it. We spent the better part of a year asking, searching, getting told "no" by place after place, before Kauai made itself unmistakably clear.

It wasn't the plan. It's home now.

Sandy beach with scattered driftwood and green bushes in the foreground, ocean waves in the midground, and clouded sky with some blue patches in the background, along with distant mountains.
Ocean waves with two whales surfacing near shore, sandy beach in background.
A nighttime scene at the beach with dark ocean waves, reflections of moonlight on water, partly cloudy sky, and a bright full moon partially covered by clouds.

We're not experts because we read the books. We're not coaches because we have it all figured out. We're here because we've done the work ourselves, we're still doing it, and we'd rather walk alongside you in it than pretend we're above it.

If that's the kind of honesty you're looking for, the podcast and the newsletter are the best place to start.
